Save the Dates – what are they? Are they necessary? Where do I start?

Officially announce your wedding date by sending your guests your Save the Dates to let them know they will be invited to your celebration! Now, you don’t necessarily have to send any, but its a courtesy to give your guests a heads up on your wedding plans, for those who need to make travel arrangements, save some extra cash and arrange their busy schedules. Since a lot of our VIG (Very Important Guests) are living in the United States, we wanted to give everyone ample time to plan and prepare for our big day. Cutting the Save the Dates can help your budget, but in the long run, if you find a great deal like I did, it really isn’t breaking the bank, and I had a really great time creating ours.

The general rule is to send them 6 to 8 months prior to the wedding. Any later than that they might as well be invitations. Send them to everyone you want to attend your wedding, even include the wedding party, siblings and parents! It is important to be absolutely positive about your guest list prior to sending out your Save the Dates, because once they are in the mail, there really isn’t any turning back. If you are following the steps I have, you’ll already have everyone’s mailing information since you’ve created your guest list and the guest’s important information.

You may not know all of the nitty gritty details, so only the crucial information is needed for now. You’ll want to include Who (the couple) What (the wedding…duh) When (the date) and Where (the city, as the venue may not be booked and its not necessary at this stage).

The really fun part about the Save the Dates is getting to design something true to the couple themselves. It isn’t necessary for your Save the Dates to really match the theme or colours of your wedding, as they are much more casual, and colours and themes may not be chosen just yet. Your goal is to create a Save the Date that represents you as a couple and will get the guests excited for your big day! As ours haven’t been sent, I won’t be showing you what we’ve come up with just yet, I want it to be a surprise to all those who will receive them. I will say that we kept it simple and sweet and in a subtle way, our Save the Dates suit our personalities.
